Yellow croaker
Yellow croaker or Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is a commercially important coastal fish of the Sciaenidae family, naturally distributed along the western and southwestern Atlantic, from the Caribbean and northern South America down to Argentina. It is a demersal species typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and over sandy or muddy bottoms, with juveniles often inhabiting estuarine areas and older fish moving into deeper coastal zones.
This gives the species a strong regional importance in South American fisheries, particularly in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. From a commercial perspective, whitemouth croaker is a well-established food fish with broad local and regional demand. It is used mainly for human consumption and is marketed in several forms, including fresh whole fish, frozen WR, HG and pan ready HG products, fillets, and salted fish. Its commercial appeal lies in its light flesh, mild taste, and good versatility in both cooking and processing, which make it suitable for everyday consumption as well as for industrial use.
The main commercial fisheries for yellow croaker are concentrated in southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, where the species is one of the key components of coastal fishing activity. It is therefore best positioned as a dependable regional Atlantic species, valued for availability, familiarity, and practical processing potential rather than for premium or luxury market placement.
