Jack mackerel
Jack mackerel is a pelagic schooling fish referring to horse mackerel family. Its natural area of living is south Pacific region, with most of the stocks living nearby Chile and Peru. Its commercial names include Jack mackerel, Horse mackerel and and Redtail jack mackerel, which should not be mistaken with Greentail jack mackerel (Trachurus declivis), found in Australia and New Zealand.
Due to abundance of the stock, and high catch quotas, Jack mackerel has been important species for the catching regions as well as for West-African markets. Having a relatively low fat content, varying between 6 and 9% across the season, and a true mackerel flavor, it is widely used for smoking, canning and frying in different markets.
The main fishing nations are Chile and Peru. The high season starts in January and runs to June. The average commercial size of the fish is 500-600 grams, or about 35-40 cm in length.
