Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), which is nowadays a genetically improved species, adapted for aquaculture, is one of the most widely farmed warmwater fish groups in the world. Tilapia farming has been commercialized in more than 100 countries, supported by the its hardiness and adaptability to a broad range of farming systems. Commercial production is carried out in ponds, cages, tanks, and other intensive systems, making tilapia one of the most flexible and scalable aquaculture species in the global market.

Tilapia is used mainly for human consumption and reaches the market as whole frozen fish and as fresh or frozen fillets. It is valued for its white to slightly pink flesh, very mild taste, and firm texture, which holds well during preparation and cooking. These qualities make tilapia a practical species for retail, foodservice, and everyday consumption markets where consistency and affordability matter.

The main aquaculture nations for tilapia are China, Indonesia, and Egypt, which FAO identifies as the largest global producers. Brazil has also strengthened its position in recent years, while other important producing countries include Bangladesh, Viet Nam, and Costa Rica serving both domestic and export markets.
